Chapter 7, Page 1

All right, Chapter Seven! I’m trying yet another strategy for the art, and I like the way it’s turning out so far. This chapter should be good-looking and fun; a lot of weird stuff can happen in the Amazon rainforest. Glad you’re with us — stay tuned!

Roger's Voiceover: By boat, bus, and car, we went deep into Mato Grosso -- the Amazon. I got worried about my expense account. When I tried to contact my editor and couldn't, I got really worried. The Undernet goes down sometimes, but it was bad timing. Then...well, then there was Girii.
Girii: That makes three crocodiles, seven snakes, and twenty-eight parrots that we've seen! And I don't care what you say, I'm pretty sure that was a monkey earlier. Oh, and by the way, I know you're both keeping secrets from me.
Jacob: Huh?
Girii: I mean, I don't pry, 'cause I'm a nice empath. I just wanted you to know that I know.
Jacob: Drive, Svengali. We're almost there.

  1. Sonja says:

Great to have Jacob back! I had to go*** Svengali, perhaps you should explain it in your comment?

  2. SCAScot says:

    Heh. OCD. Love it.

Sonja – Svengali was a hypnotist in a late 19th century novel. His name has come to be used to describe of someone with manipulates or controls another person through deceit, persuasion, or other means, usually with evil intent or ulterior motives.

  3. Remus Shepherd says:

Svengali is obscure, but it is a real English language word. It’s just old-fashioned, which makes it perfect for Jacob. 🙂

  4. Sonja says:

    @SCAScot: I know. I looked it up. 😉

@Remus: It’s really part of the English language? I didn’t know that, as I’m no native speaker.

  5. Mr. Ookami says:

@sonja I am a native speaker of english and I have never heard that word before. Did you know that english is one of the hardest laguages to learn?

  6. You can do a search on ‘Svengali, Trilby’

Wikipedia has a writeup on the novel and several movies. The movies focused on how Svengali hypnotises Trilby to become a great singer who can’t function without his influence.
