You’ve been like mad science to me. A great inspiration, and maybe I’ll actually do something about it. But oh gods the world will probably explode.

Chapter 13, Page 2

One thing that I haven’t shown enough in the comic is the greater world situation.  We get the genocide project perspective every now and then, but I don’t really have a ‘normal person’ point of view.  That’s okay, a page like this is all we need.  It also reminds us that Jacob wants what’s best for everybody.  He’s just not always sure what that is.

Jacob: But what do you think you're going to do? Start a global revolution?
Girii: Maybe.
Jacob: Why? G.U.S. has its faults...but they've solved climate change, overpopulation...
Girii: By killing everyone.
Jacob: Hunger, and war. For most people this is darn near utopia.
Girii: Except people like us, who they hunt down and kill.
Jacob: There are always misfits.
Girii: And it's our right to fight the system.
Jacob: How? By killing the genocide men? All the world leaders?
Girii: If we get people on our side...
Jacob: The people are dumb, or meek, or easily slaughtered in mass numbers. Every government leader knows this. They rely on it.

  1. Ming the Merciless says:

Climate change now? No more global warming?

  2. Moxie Man says:

Jacob’s last line is pretty much how it is today.

  3. Solved climate change? *We’ve* solved it, we have the answer, we just need to execute the plan. 😛

It’s one thing to drop emissions to zero, it’s another to deal with the invested extra CO2 that won’t go away on its own for centuries. Geoengineering projects provide some options, but you’re pretty much guaranteed some “exciting” unintended consequences. However, that seems like the kind of gamble that the world of Genocide Man is willing to make…

  4. dwwolf says:

Solved by having far fewer people around to use up natural resources.

  5. Remus Shepherd says:

Moxie: That statement is pretty much true for all of human history.

Would you believe that this sociopolitical commentary is all just setting up a joke? 🙂

  6. Zarpaulus says:

I get the feeling Jacob is a little biased.

In any case, it seemed like Kevin’s relationships with the rest of the G.U.S. were a little strained.

  7. ArKain says:

I personally don’t quite agree with the people being easily slaughtered in mass numbers part… at least not if you still want a population to provide you with taxes.

  8. Drunken Nordmann says:

    @ArKain
Well, objectively there are a lot of people in the world who don’t pay taxes – they’re either not able to because they are poor or they’re rich people who simply reject paying taxes – so kiling a lot of people would (again, objectively) improve the situation, as it would “solve” overpopulation and remove the taxe dodgers from the equation, maybe even allow some equality.

But somehow I have the feeling that even in a world where the offical standard procedure is “kill a lot of people” the rich people are still exempt from that,

But hey, what do I know – I still think of money as a very flawed concept. 🙂
