A country which is secure in its institutions and confident in its laws should not be ashamed of the concept of mercy.

The fictional Sarin-M (the ‘M’ stands for ‘munition’) has the same effects as the real-world neurotoxin Cyclosarin, with one main difference:  Sarin-M is injected, Cyclosarin is an airborne spray.

We’re not just using bioweapons, but chemical weapons also.  The world of Genocide Man is  a future where law enforcement authorities have taken off the kid gloves.

Roger: That was incredible. The speed, the -- did that gun shoot lightning? Hey, are you okay? You're shaking.
Jacob: The speed has a cost. Artificial adrenals pump something like rocket fuel into my veins. The crash can be rough. But the fight didn't last long, I'll be fine. As for the railgun, it shoots nickel-plated plastic flechettes. There's a discharge when the needle leaves the barrel. The arc should be smaller than that. I need to get it tuned. But these punks aren't dead. Not yet. The needles are tipped with Sarin-M neurotoxin. It causes a total, rigid paralysis within three seconds. Right now, they're suffocating. They'll be dead in a few minutes. Come back in ten. This isn't something you want to watch.
Roger: Yes, I do! I, uh, I think.
Jacob: Get. Out.

  1. Ryk E. Spoor says:

You have a HAND CARRIED RAILGUN and you’re POISONING THE DARTS? You know, the railgun could kill by itself, why are you guilding the lily?

  2. SCAScot says:

    Rail gun – NAILED IT!

As for “gilding the lily” by having the darts be poisoned, I have to point out that even with the high velocity that the rail gun would impart, the kinetic energy in the flechettes isn’t enough to kill. Given the size of the weapon, and the power requirements to operate a linear accelerator/rail gun, I think these darts are on the order of sewing needles or smaller. So, yeah, having them poisoned makes sense.

  3. Remus Shepherd says:

Yeah, a realistic railgun might pierce a major artery or tunnel into the brain, but aside from that it isn’t a deadly weapon. It just shoots needles.

In 2006, the U.S. Navy tested a ship-mounted railgun that shot 3.2 kg slugs at around 5000 m/s. You don’t need to poison *that*. But you’re also not going to get it in handgun size.

Then there’s the Quake 2 railgun, which accelerated bits of metal to something around lightspeed and hit the target with a blast of particles. That’s not the kind of sci-fi going on here. 🙂
