This page is action.  Next page is exposition, explaining what the hell just happened.  🙂

I’m not sure about how to draw fast motion.  I don’t like ‘Flash’-style speed lines, probably because I don’t understand them very well.  In the end I decided to use panel tricks and multiple images to convey motion.  But I may have to study up on these kind of art tricks, because Jacob isn’t the only person I’m going to have to use them for.

  1. Moxie Man says:

I like the effect. No, really.

  2. Konrad says:

You did it exactly right; the multiple images and spaced out dialog made it perfectly clear what was happening.

  3. SCAScot says:

I agree – I think the effect works well.

And that’s either an energy weapon or a hand-held linear accelerator. Either way, I’m interested to find out.

  4. Remus Shepherd says:

Thanks, guys, I appreciate the feedback!

  5. Edie Howe says:

While the panels do convey speed, the fracturing of the text with the final word incomplete definitely nails it. Well done.

  6. Now we get to see him take out the toys, and come out to play. And we find that he’s scarier than Albert Wesker.

  7. Dave says:

I concur with the above posters, the Matrix-style afterimages plus the staccato dialog conveys that he is moving extremely, maybe even impossibly, fast very effectively. Speed lines would look too much like a manga, which I don’t think is the look you are aiming for.

  8. Alyred says:

Yeah, agreed with the above.. good work. It took me a second, but worked well. I think the effect might have been improved with a few more afterimages, perhaps the “oldest” in the sequence faded out a bit more and getting more “solid” as they approach the second of portrayal in the frame.

  9. Remus Shepherd says:

I tried that, Alyred, and I didn’t like the look of it. Part of that was because my Wacom Cintiq is much darker than my main monitor, so images tend to fade to black much easier. I might try the fade effect again in the future when the fights have better lighting.
