Doubt yourself and you doubt everything you see. Judge yourself and you see judges everywhere. But if you listen to the sound of your own voice, you can rise above doubt and judgment. And you can see forever.

Chapter 16, Page 19

What sets Caera apart from all the other Genocide agents is her training.  They had a soldier, a mercenary, and a trio of scientists…but while Caera knew some fighting techniques, she was a diplomat by trade.  Combat is important in their job, but sometimes it’s useful to talk yourself out of a bad situation — or talk someone else into one.

Jacob: But if you are susceptible...
Caera: You're right. We can't take the risk. I need to stay in the exclusion zone. I'll cull the Jian Shi here for a few weeks. If I turn I'll lose my memory, so I shouldn't be much of a threat. The question is, what are you going to do?
Jacob: Doesn't matter what I do.
Caera: Yes it does. The Genocide Project needs you either to lead it...or dismantle it for good. It's your choice, and a choice that only you can make.

  1. Zer-Author says:

Okay, gotta admit, I did not see that coming at all. A secret poison in her bloodstream, sure. Luring him in with sympathy, then backstabbing him, sure. But faking a possible zombie infection in order to force Jacob to leave her behind? And then using that to blackmail him into taking on the Genocide project head on?
Yeah, I did not see that coming in the slightest.

  2. DanielLC says:

This seems to be the only place that spells it “jian shi”. Everywhere else it’s “jiang shi” or “jiangshi”. Or “僵尸”.

  3. Pat Scaramuzza says:

That wouldn’t be the first time I’ve slightly mangled a translation. (I don’t think I can ever fix the Fumiaki mistake.)

Fortunately, ‘jian shi’ is an anglicization of the Chinese term, so I expect that mangling happened naturally. By the time G.U.S. put a name on the plague, China had collapsed into chaos.

  4. SCAScot says:

Wait…He’s got a pistol-sized railgun with enough power to fire several hundred shots,, there’s artificially intelligent computers with integrated power supplies small enough to fit inside a human skull, a reporter with technological implants that are impossible today but actually antiquated in the story, the whole thing is set in a world where genetic engineering and manipulation isn’t cutting edge but rather commonplace, and you’re going to worry about a spelling mistake?

    Perspective, man.

  5. chukg says:

Ha, good twist, I didn’t see that coming.

  6. God of Cows says:

“Okay, so I’LL stay here safe with all these squishy zombies to kill while YOU go fight Lola. That woman is crazy.”
