Because our troops might kill your civilians, in several million individual unrelated failures of discipline, maybe it would be a good idea for you to give us what we want.

Chapter 17, Page 19

When I gave Kasey the script for this page, I told him what expressions Girii should have in each panel…then I reminded him that Girii’s facial expressions can be anything she wants them to be.  Something Jacob probably should keep in mind.

↓ Transcript
Jacob: Where'd you get the gun?
Girii: Friends of yours. They had so many, I thought they wouldn't miss one.
Jacob: So you didn't kill anyone for it?
Girii: No.
Jacob: Good. Later, I'll have to lecture you on the care and feeding of your soul.
Girii: Hah -- you?
Jacob: For now, I need to find Kentaro.
Girii: So you can kill him?
Jacob: Yep. Do you have a problem with that?
Girii: Actually...no, I don't.

  1. Unmaker says:

So either her empathy doesn’t extend to AI or Kentaro is so ~!@#$%^&*()_+ scary that she doesn’t care. Considering her first experience with AI is the one that crashed a bunch of planes, she is probably already prejudiced against them.

  2. Breezee says:

Human experience is relative. If Girii feels heightened empathy for everyone except AIs, then the end result is basically the same as her having a special distaste for AIs. It doesn’t really matter if she has a reason to dislike one — people listen to their guts WAY more than they should.

Of course, she also might be lying here and is about to do something stupid. Hard to tell.

  3. Jordan says:

I’m guessing that she has a hard time empathizing with Kentaro now since he doesn’t have any flesh-ware that her abilities can interface with. Yes, I realized how weird that sounded after I typed it up.
