Freddie experienced the sort of abysmal soul-sadness which afflicts one of Tolstoy’s Russian peasants when, after putting in a heavy day’s work strangling his father, beating his wife, and dropping the baby in the reservoir, he turns to the cupboard, only to find the vodka bottle empty.

Nothing wrong with being an expert.  But when that expertise is the only tool you possess…well, a hammer sees the whole world as a nail.

Jacob: Doctor Fumiaki! You consider yourself an expert in cloning, don't you?
Fumiaki: Hmn? Why yes, Jacob. It's a basic technology.
Jacob: You cloned Msaka in Africa.
Fumiaki: I was repaying a debt.
Jacob: And cloned yourself a son.
Fumiaki: Afraid I was never very good at dating.
Jacob: In the Amazon, you put cloned human brains into slo-cows.
Fumiaki: Yes, but that research was a dead end.
Largo: This does not surprise Largo.

  1. Sonja says:

What I’m wondering about: What were Msaka and Girii talking about with Fumiaki when Jacob entered?

  2. Remus Shepherd says:

Gah, I don’t have space on the page for every side conversation. 🙂 Msaka is probably interested in making warriors. Girii is just trying to get into people’s heads — it’s her hobby.

  3. Jerden says:

Largo is never disappointed, is he?
    Currently he’s my favourite.

  4. Matt40000 says:

With Msaka, Joey and Largo around I tend to forget Jacob is a fairly tall guy.
    Or us Fumiaki just short?

I suspect a plethora (what is the collective noun for clones?) of Fumiakis made it easy for him, or several of him, to disappear

  5. Remus Shepherd says:

Jacob is supposed to be 6’2″, if I recall. Fumiaki’s pretty short — I’d have to check my notes but I thought he was 5’5″. Msaka is a giant, and Largo ain’t human. We’ve got a nice mix of heights on this page.

  6. God of Cows says:

Plot twist, this Fumiaki is a clone and the real Fumiaki is Largo.

  7. Wait, I don’t remember Msaka having been cloned. My memory for plot *is* quite bad, but this still feels like new information to me.

  8. Ming the Merciless says:

Tall blond Inuits always surprise, but are not unheard of…They may be the one having started that “Eh?” at the end of Canadians’ phrases…
M’Saka’s mom took care of Fumiaki in hiding, if I remember right…http://www.genocideman.com/?p=186

  9. Ah, thanks for the link, Ming — I see, Msaka is a clone of her mom.

  10. Joe says:

Well duh, he wants eternal youth. I pointed this out pageeeeees ago.
